The Ritz Theater, a large brick building covered with limestone carvings opened in Indianapolis 1927. After many changes in both the programmatic content and its name over the years, it eventually closed in 1972. To create RITZ, the Shame Thugs immersed themselves in the sounds of musical legends like Frank Zappa and Savoy Brown—musicians who played at the Ritz Theater during the heyday of musical experimentation and blues rock in the 1960s and 1970s. The bulk of the track in RITZ draws inspiration from musicians such as The Fugs, and The Mothers of Invention, and Captain Beefheart (whom they sampled for the beat of the track). The bass guitar sounds like the empty spaces and echoes contained within abandoned building. By incorporating the sound bites of found basement objects used to create the empty clanging noise that punctuate the track, RITZ captures the essence of big, old, sacred, and historically significant spaces in Indianapolis.
I don't need every Kronos performance to be one that shakes me to my essence, but I do always want them to be interesting. Kronos has been my gateway to discovering a lot of composers I never knew of before, so this one is worth checking out. Richard Weems
