Oliver Blank • “The Soundtrack of the Bureau of Manufactured History”
French Philosopher Albert Camus said: “Fiction is the lie through which we tell the truth.” In The Soundtrack of the Bureau of Manufactured History, a remixed collection of rumors, dreams, historical moments, personal reports, and coincidences that produce a chaotic wide-angle story of the truth of today’s city of Indianapolis. The Bureau of Manufactured History is a collaboration between musician Oliver Blank and writer James A. Reeves that explores the personalities of cities. In 2013, Reeves spent a month in Indianapolis writing stories based on urban legends, historical rumors, and general chatter recorded on a telephone line he and Blank set up to collect individuals’ rumors, dreams, and personal reports. Blank then transformed elements of these stories into a 45-minute composition and a performance-based installation using a desk and audio speaker. The Soundtrack of the Bureau of Manufactured History is an excerpt of the larger composition meant to serve as an audio recording of the soul of Indianapolis that starts by talking about the tangible fears of the city.

I don't need every Kronos performance to be one that shakes me to my essence, but I do always want them to be interesting. Kronos has been my gateway to discovering a lot of composers I never knew of before, so this one is worth checking out. Richard Weems
